It's easy to understand why blockchain and cryptocurrency speculation have become synonymous in the public mind price charts get the attention. But some of the more durable applications of the underlying technology have nothing to do with trading tokens, and several of them are already operating at meaningful scale specifically in African markets.
Why Africa is a genuine test case, not just a growth market

Cross-border payments without the multi-day delay
For businesses paying suppliers or contractors across borders, stablecoin-based settlement can cut multi-day bank transfer times down to minutes. Chipper Cash, which serves around 5 million customers across Africa, integrated Ripple's payment technology in March 2025 and now processes transactions in 3 to 5 seconds, with cross-border settlement completing in minutes rather than the standard 3-5 business days typical of correspondent banking. Stablecoins also reduce currency-conversion losses traditional transfers can lose as much as 5% of value during conversion, a cost stablecoins largely avoid by settling in a stable digital currency directly.
Nigeria's own regulated stablecoin
In February 2025, Nigeria launched cNGN Africa's first regulated Naira-backed stablecoin, developed by Convexity in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and operating under Securities and Exchange Commission oversight. This matters less for its early circulation numbers than for what it signals: Nigerian regulators are actively building a compliance framework for this technology rather than treating it purely as a grey-market activity, which changes the risk calculus for businesses considering it.
Supply chain verification
Recording a product's origin and movement on an immutable ledger gives buyers a way to verify authenticity that a printed certificate can't replicate particularly relevant for agricultural exports and handmade goods, where provenance directly affects the price a buyer is willing to pay. This use case has drawn less attention than payments, but it addresses a specific, persistent problem in export-oriented African industries: proving a claim about a product's origin to a buyer who has no other way to verify it.
Smart contracts as unglamorous automation
Stripped of the hype, a smart contract is simply an agreement that executes itself once agreed conditions are met useful for anything from escrow arrangements to royalty splits, without needing a single intermediary to enforce the terms. This is a quieter, less headline-grabbing application than remittances, but it's arguably closer to what most small businesses would actually encounter first, particularly in contexts like marketplace platforms or freelance payment escrow.
The technology is most useful exactly where nobody's watching the price chart.
What this means for a business evaluating the space
The realistic entry point for most SMEs isn't holding volatile crypto assets it's using stablecoin-based payment rails, increasingly offered by regulated regional fintechs, specifically for cross-border supplier payments or freelance/contractor payouts where traditional banking fees and delays are highest. That's where the cost savings are most concrete and the regulatory ground, at least in Nigeria, is becoming more solid rather than less.
